Advocacy Specialist

Disability Rights Montana (DRM), the federally mandated Protection and Advocacy (P&A) agency for the State of Montana, seeks to hire an Advocacy Specialist to advance the human, civil, and legal rights for people with disabilities.

Under the supervision of an attorney, this position will focus on protecting the rights of people with disabilities who live in institutions, congregate care facilities, and group homes. Preference is that the applicant has experience working specifically with Montana’s DPHHS programs and services.

This position solves complex problems experienced by persons with disabilities through investigation, research, communication, and negotiation to avoid or resolve legal actions. Basic computer skills and excellent writing skills are required. When legal actions are commenced, this position will provide substantial assistance to the supervising attorney, so knowledge of legal or administrative processes is a plus.

Five years of qualifying experience required; or a bachelor’s degree and three years of qualifying experience.

Position is located in Helena, Montana. Some travel is required. Salary is commensurate to experience with starting salary range from $34,000 to $44,200. A generous benefit package includes paid time off, 403(b) retirement plan, health, life, dental, vision, and long term care insurance.

Attorney-Special Education

Disability Rights Montana is seeking to hire an Attorney with litigation experience to work in our Education Work Unit. The Education Work Unit advocates on behalf of children with disabilities who receive special education services, will transition out of high school, or are in need of Medicaid or other support services.

Duties will include conducting and supervising investigations and systemic reform efforts and individual representation in formal and informal legal proceedings.

Experience is preferred in the following areas:

  • Special Education
  • Medicaid
  • Disabilities and the disability system

Applicant must have the following:

  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the state of Montana or admitted to the State Bar of Montana within one year of date of hire.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience with litigation.
  • Some supervisory or leadership experience.

Position is located in Helena, Montana. Travel will be required. Salary is commensurate with experience. A generous benefit package includes paid time off, 403(b) retirement plan, health, life, dental, vision, and long term care insurance.

Disability Rights Montana is seeking to hire an Attorney with litigation experience to work in our Abuse and Neglect Work Unit.  The Abuse and Neglect Work Unit focuses on protecting the rights of people with disabilities who live in institutions, congregate care facilities, and group homes.

∙           Civil and/or Disability Rights Law
∙           Work with DPHHS/State Agencies
∙           Administrative Law

Applicant must have the following:

∙           Minimum of five years’ experience with litigation.
∙           Some supervisory or leadership experience.
